Check out Doug Ramsey's comments about "Listen to This..." - Dave Powers is a good player. He has harmonic depth and nice touch and he swings. That's the first time I've heard "In a Sentimental Mood" as a samba (with Caribbean touches). He and his guys brought it off nicely. I was pleased that he did "You're Looking at Me" and did it well. I've always liked the Nat Cole recording. I'd like to hear more of his jazz pieces along the lines of "Project Object" and "Immortal..." well-written and well-played tunes. "So Many Stars" is a superb song, with great lyrics by the Bergmans. This is certainly the most ambitious treatment of it that I've heard. He's a good singer. Clearly, if Powers wanted to be a full-time jazz player, as opposed to making a living, he could do that. If he wants to expand beyond Columbus, an entertainer of his variety and scope could no doubt get club bookings around the country. Thanks for letting me hear Dave Powers. -Doug Ramsey (author of the book "Jazz Matters", contributing columnist for Jazz Times magazine, and wrote liner notes for "Bill Evans: The Secret Sessions" on Fantasy Records.) in response to a friend... Thanks Doug.
